Holi is known to be the Festival of Colors which is celebrated across India. You can see a joyous spirit in Mathura which is the birthplace of Krishna.
Holi is celebrated each year in India that marks the arrival of spring and end of winter. It also signifies the victory of good over evil. It takes place on the full moon day of the Hindu calendar month i.e. between February and March.Officially, Holi is celebrated for two days – ‘Holika Dahan’ and ‘Holi.’
Holika Dahan
People gather woods to make large bonfires that are lit at night before Holi begins which is known as ‘Holika Dahan.’ Holika was a demoness according to Hindu scripture who was burned to death by Lord Vishnu. During the event of the festival, once the sun goes down, people light fire to celebrate the triumph of good over evil.
Holi
In the morning, people play with colored powder and throw water balloons on each other. Children as well as elders roam across their colony in groups and put colors on whoever they see on the streets. Special sweets such as Gujiyas are prepared in almost every household. Another drink called Thandai is prepared and in major cities, parties are
arranged at large farmhouses or resorts.
But this year celebrating the much-awaited festival of colors will not be a wise thing to do and the obvious reason is the coronavirus outbreak. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also supports this by tweeting on Wednesday “Experts across the world have advised reducing mass gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus. Hence, this year I have decided not to participate in any Holi Milan program.”
Physical touch is a leading cause of the spread of coronavirus and Holi cannot be played without it. You cannot play Holi without coming in close contact with each other, right from applying colors to greeting each other with handshakes and hugs. Large gatherings should be avoided completely to stay safe this Holi as it increases the risk factor of virus transmission.
If you still wish to soak in the Holi vibe you can Sing celebratory Holi songs while washing your hands with soap and water. It is the only viable way to celebrate the festival this year because frequently washing your hands is an effective way to prevent infection.
Have a safe Holi!
