Baisakhi, also known as Vaisakhi, is a festival celebrated annually by the Sikh and Hindu communities in India and around the world. It marks the beginning of the new year in the Sikh calendar and commemorates the formation of the Khalsa, a community of initiated Sikhs, by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.
This year we are celebrating Baisakhi on the 14th of April.
People on this day wake up early in the morning to take a dip in rivers or lakes and visit gurdwaras (Sikh temples) to offer prayers and seek blessings.
In Punjab, the heartland of the Sikh community, Baisakhi is celebrated as a harvest festival. Farmers thank God for a good crop and pray for a prosperous year ahead. They also participate in the traditional Bhangra and Gidda dances, which involve energetic movements and colorful attire.
People will often gather in temples and gurudwaras to pray and offer their thanks to the gods. Special prayers are also said for prosperity and peace in the coming year.
Outside of the temples, people will come together for a variety of celebrations. There are traditional dances and singing, as well as sports competitions and fairs. People will often exchange food and gifts with one another and partake in feasts. Schools, offices and business will all be closed for the day, so that everyone can enjoy the festivities.
Baisakhi also marks the day when Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji sacrificed his life to protect the religious freedom of Hindus who were being forcibly converted to Islam by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was the ninth Guru of Sikhism and is revered for his courage and self-sacrifice in protecting religious freedom. He was martyred in 1675 AD, but his legacy lives on in the teachings of Sikhism and in the celebration of Baisakhi every year.
On this day, Sikhs honor the memory of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and reflect on his teachings of justice, peace, and compassion.
Baisakhi is a symbol of unity, brotherhood, and faith, and its celebration promotes social harmony and cultural diversity. We the team at DIDM wish that may the festival of Baisakhi brings you good fortune, success, and happiness.
Happy Baisakhi to all of you!
