Today is Ganesh Chaturthi. This year Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Saturday, September 7, 2024, and the occasion of Ganesh Visarjan is on September 17, 2024, Tuesday.
Every year Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Chaturthi tithi of Shukla Paksha and is celebrated for 10 days. The last day of the celebration is observed as Ganesh Visarjan.
As per the Hindu Legend, Maa Parvati created Lord Ganesha to guard the place while she was taking a bath. But Lord Shiva did not know about Lord Ganesha and as per Mata Parvati's instructions, Ganesha did not allow Lord Shiva to enter the bathing place.
This made Lord Shiva furious on Lord Ganesha and he severed Ganesha’s head. This made Maa Parvati angry and she took the avatar of Kaali that threatened to end the world. When Shiva got to know about the truth behind Ganesha’s birth, He requested his men to fetch the head of a child whose mother was not looking.
After some time, Lord Shiva's men came with the head of a baby elephant and it was placed on Ganesha. That’s how Ganesha became the elephant-headed God. Ganesha is the beloved God and holds great significance for Hindus.
