Why do we celebrate Dhanteras?

The festival of Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi and why we celebrate Dhanteras has some important mythological origins that belong with it.

During Samudra Manthan or the churning of the cosmic ocean, the Lord Dhanvantari, known as the physician of the gods, emerged with a pot of elixir that could provide health and immortality. The celebrate this celestial event and to adore the Lord Dhanvnatari for good wealth and well-being, Dhanteras is celebrated.

Another legend revolves around King Hima’s sixteen-year-old son's story in which he will get bit by the snake on the fourth day of his marriage, as per his horoscope. To prevent this, his wife adorns all the entrances with gold coins, jewelry, and beautiful decorations, and she awake all night with her husband to impress the god of death.

Lord Yama, the god of death impressed by her offerings and dedication and came to her doorstep disguising himself as a serpent and sparing the prince’s life. After that, this became a tradition to worship wealth to negate the effects and save any from untimely death.

This festival is not all about money, it is to seek the blessings of Maa Laxmi, Lord Dhanvantari for a secure and happy life and bring good luck into our lives.
