Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated in India to honor the birth anniversary of Maharshi Valmiki. It is one of the most significant Hindu festivals as per the Indian Cultural Calendar.
This year, Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated on October 17th, 2024 on the night of the full moon known as ‘Purnima’ of the month of Ashwin. Valmiki Jayanti is also referred to as Pragat Diwas and mainly falls between September-October Month.
DIDM honors the legacy of Adi Kavi ‘Valmiki’ and celebrates this day, which has great historical significance and offers us lessons of great value. He has a great contribution to the literature world and is known as the first poet of the Sanskrit Language.
Maharshi Valmiki was the first poet and famous for writing and composing the epic Ramayana based on the life of Lord Rama. He is also known as Adi Kavi which means ‘the first poet’ in Sanskrit. It is believed that he lived around 500 BC and wrote many spiritual literature.
The Ramayan narrates the life of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his loyal companion Hanuman, and their whole life story and journey. The story of Valmiki becoming Maharshi is also very interesting as he was once a bandit and how he transformed and redeemed into the first poet reflected the core values like the power of perseverance.
Valmiki has many names like Balmiki, Ratnakara, Lal Beg, and Bala Shah, and his meeting with Narada Muni changed his life as he advised him to chant the word Rama.
Valmiki Ji is also known for his philosophy and Dharma advocacy. His life teaches us great lessons on values and he had a great influence on Indian culture that continues to inspire generations.
