Celebrating The Beautiful Bond of Brother and Sister at DIDM!

Significance of Bhai Dooj Festival

Bhai Dooj is a Hindu festival that is composed of two words ‘Bhai’ which means ‘Brother’ and ‘Dooj’ which refers to the second day of the new moon.

This year Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on November 3, 2024.

That is why it is celebrated on the second day after the Diwali Festival which falls on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik as per the Hindu calendar.

As per the legend, this celebration is related to the divine meeting of Lord Yama who is the god of death, and his sister Yamuna.

One time Yama visited his sister Yamuna and she welcomed him with pure heart, beautiful rituals, and blessings. For the grand welcome, Yama granted her a boon that every brother who will visit his sister on this day would be blessed with good health and prosperity.

This story is all about the protection, care, and well-being of the sibling's wishes for each other and increases the significance of Bhai Dooj.

How to celebrate the Bhai Dooj Festival?

Bhai Dooj festival holds great religious and cultural significance in the Hindu religion and celebrates a unique bond of brother and sister.

On this day, siblings get up early in the morning and after taking a bath wear beautiful and traditional attires. Those who do not have any siblings can perform this ceremony with Ladoo Gopal Ji or with Lord Ganesha.

Sisters fast and prepare delicious meals for their brothers. Anyone can visit each other on this day, no restriction only bothers to visit their sister, sisters can do it too.

Sisters decorate a beautiful thali for their brothers with rice or akshat, roli, dried coconut, some sweets, and any gift that they want to have for their brother.

The Sisters perform a tilak ceremony and apply tilak on her brother’s forehead and give them a whole dried coconut.

They perform many rituals and pray for the long life and well-being of the brothers. Brothers return their gratitude with beautiful gifts to their sisters as a token of love and affection.

After all these rituals, sisters can break their fast and eat sattvic foods with the family.

In modern times, when families are far across from each other, the celebration continues with the help of video calls, and online gifts. Sisters do virtual tilaks to their brothers as they cannot meet in person.

The digital world offers them a creative way to celebrate and honor the bond of sibling love and perform rituals.

As we celebrate Bhai Dooj today, let us embrace the beautiful bond of siblings in both modern and traditional ways. The essence remains unchanged and the love should be eternal for each other.
